“Look Mom I Can Fly” Review

Ryan Guilbeau

Over the course of just a few short years, rapper Travis Scott has become one of the world’s most popular artists. He released his debut album, “Rodeo” in 2015, and gained a substantial following from that. But after he released his third album, “Astroworld” in 2018, he became an international icon. At the Grammys, Astroworld was nominated for Album of the Year, and “Sicko Mode” (a song on the album) was nominated for Song of the Year. The mayor of Houston (Travis Scott’s hometown) even made November 18 “Astroworld Day” in Houston, and gave Scott a key to the city. The Netflix documentary, “Look Mom I Can Fly” includes Travis Scott’s raw reactions to all of his biggest career moments from the last two years. From never before seen footage of his music being made, to him performing concerts in front of tens of thousands of people, this documentary is a must-watch for the Travis Scott fanbase.

I can easily say that Travis Scott is one of my favorite rappers, if not my favorite rapper, and I think that anyone who likes Travis Scott should definitely watch the film. Even people who aren’t necessarily Travis Scott fans but fans of hip hop I think would also enjoy the program. The documentary goes in chronological order, starting in May of 2017 all the way up until April of 2019.

A big part of the documentary is about the atmosphere of Travis Scott’s concerts. Scott is infamous for having wild concerts, where the crowd gets really into the music and there are lots of props and lights. The program lets the fans see what goes into that behind the scenes and how Scott works with the stage crew to make those crazy concerts possible. It makes the fans appreciate those concerts even more. It also really shows how much passion Scott has not only with his performances on the stage but with how badly he wants to make sure every concert is perfect.

My favorite part was the final stages of recording Astroworld. Scott and his crew went to Hawaii to finish up the album a couple of weeks prior to release, and the camera crew caught got footage of Scott recording some of the verses on the album. I’ve been listening to that album for over a year, so to see the songs I’ve listened to hundreds of times getting recorded was really interesting. I also loved watching Scott’s reactions to the songs once they were done. It was really cool to see.

The ending of the film was about Scott’s performance at the Super Bowl halftime show and his Grammy experience. This was also interesting because we get to see how much preparation goes into a Super Bowl halftime show, as well as how much Scott cares about the Grammys. Seeing Scott’s parents watch him perform was awesome too because you can really tell how proud they are. The Grammys were interesting because you could see Scott’s first reactions to him losing in both categories he was nominated for. He was definitely disappointed, but he handled it professionally.

Overall, I’d give this documentary a 9/10 rating. I was so invested while watching because this was by far the most personal, up-close footage of Travis Scott behind the scenes than we had ever seen before. It makes you appreciate everything about him more because it’s clear how much work he puts into everything he does. Hopefully, we will see some new music from him soon!
