Have a Wonderful Break!

Art: What We All Have in Common

Even the dreary rain which overtook last Saturday couldn’t stop the flow of artisans and performers who brought out the very best of Westborough’s talent. “It’s an amazing concept. We finally have the chance to publicly celebrate art,” says Beth Anderson, a locally-known jewelry-maker.

Held in the Bay State Commons on October 3rd, the Arts in Common festival was a chance for anyone interested in the local art community to immerse himself in the art around him; it also provided a chance for artisans to introduce their line of work to the public. “It’s great because anyone can come and make new friends or come with old ones to bond over some great creativity,” says Priscilla Federici. From bagpipe-playing to dancing, from henna to glass jewelry, and from paintings to handmade quilts; there was something for everyone at the Arts in Common.

“It’s about bringing together the different art forms and giving an introduction to creativity,” comments Kathy Slawsky as she overlooked the rooms where the events were held. Hosts were presenting their art forms and each host was willing to explain their certain talent and craft. Several of the artisans are well known within the area, whereas some were just breaking out with their abilities.

For jewelry there were: rings, bracelets, and necklaces made out of materials you never would have thought possible, (including glass hairpins to forged metal cuffs.) Artwork was displayed everywhere, some just for viewing purposes, some for sale. The variety of media ranged from acrylic paint, watercolor, photographs and charcoal, each one showing off the talent and style of each individual artist. Several uncommon crafts were also displayed – carving, lettering, candle making, card making – and received new found attention.

Performances ranged from music, dance, and theater. Many of these groups are locally like; like the community groups, Synchromatica and The Notables, choirs, New Sound Assembly and the Westboro Community Chorus, the Studio Ballet of Hudson, Central Massachusetts Chinese Language School, and Natyamani School of Dance. Westborough High School was represented by Center Stage Improve Troupe, the Marching Band, String Group, and A Cappella Ensembles.

“For an artist, there’s nothing more than being able to showcase what you’re capable of creating,” says Kest Schwartzman, creator of Vagabond Jewelry. Whether it ends up being a craft or performance, the creative souls of Westborough are finally getting the chance to show what they’re made of. It’s a chance to get the recognition that they fully deserve.
