I’m Not “Lovin’ It”: McDonald’s Spicy Nuggets a Disappointment

Mcdonalds is one of the largest fast-food chains in the world. From the nuggets, burgers, apple pies, ice cream, and fries, they seem to have it all. However, they have been missing one thing that many people and fans have been patiently waiting for: spicy nuggets.

On September 16, 2020, Mcdonalds took the world by storm. They released the long-awaited spicy nuggets.

The nuggets are fried in a tempura batter, seasoned with cayenne and chili pepper. I was lucky enough to taste the spicy nuggets on more than one occasion.

To start off with, I went to the Mcdonalds located at 166 E Main St, in Westborough. There were two drive-through lanes and the wait time was minimal. There was not a long line, which was unexpected. There was a lot of hype surrounding the nuggets.

The spicy nuggets box is very similar to the original nuggets box. The only difference is a small circle that says “Spicy.” Once the lid was open the nuggets looked nothing like I expected. They have a slight orange tint, but other than that they look and smell exactly the same as the original nuggets.

The nuggets did have a crunchy shell on the outside and were soft on the inside. Upon the first bite, no spice was detected. After eating one whole nugget the spice was still missing. Once the whole box of five was gone, there was a subtle burn in my mouth. The burn was very minimal and disappointings

The issue with the nugget is not the breading, but the spice. It left my friend and I asking for more spice. They sadly tasted like there was only a hint of pepper in the breading.

WHS junior Charlie Snow remarks, “They had a nice crunch and some good spice but lacked a bit of flavor.”

Overall the flavor was lackluster and the experience was not worth buying and eating the spicy nuggets.

The spicy nuggets are decent, but do nothing to set themselves apart from competitors like Chick-Fil-A and Wendys.

I would not recommend buying the spicy nuggets, and instead would suggest a less expensive and tastier alternative like Wendy’s Spicy nuggets, because they actually have good spice and crunch.
