Emily In Paris is a romantic comedy TV show. The series stars Lily Collins cast as Emily Cooper, who is an aspiring marketing executive. Emily moves to Paris to provide an American perspective to a French Marketing Firm, Agence Grateau. The story portrays elements of ambition, friendship, and the quest for love in a foreign city. Emily’s struggle to balance her American ideals with French culture is a recurring theme in this show.
Season four part two of the series was released on Thursday, September 12. In this season, Emily faces new struggles in her professional and personal life. She handles more challenging campaigns and navigates through work drama with her co-workers. After watching this season, it became apparent that Emily’s relationship with her best friend, Mindy, played by Ashley Park, became much stronger compared to the other seasons. The roommates experience several challenges throughout this season and they both are always there for each other. They both seem to be the only constant in the entire show. No matter how much drama unfolds around them their relationship remains intact which is why I consider them to have the strongest relationship out of everyone in the series.
And let’s not forget the romantic tension between the promising chef Gabriel, played by Lucas Bravo, and Emily throughout the entire show. Season three ended on a cliffhanger between the two and fans were eager to see what unfolded after the drama that occurred at the end of season three.
Moving on to the comedy aspect of the show, the humor is as sharp as ever by mixing situational comedy with witty dialogue. This combination made this season entertaining to watch.
Similar shows such as Gossip Girl, The Devil Wears Prada, and Sex and the City have been constantly compared, by fans, to Emily in Paris. But who can blame them when they certainly do have similar aspects to them such as the fashion-forward protagonist and the romantic storylines? Lily Collins responded by saying, “I totally get the comparisons between Sex and the City and the show because it’s a Darren Star and Patricia Field collaboration and so that totally makes sense, […] Carrie loved fashion, Emily loves fashion. But down to the actual fine-tuning of both of the storylines, they are very, very different.” She stated that the Parisian aesthetic of Emily in Paris makes it drastically different from shows like Sex and the City.
One critique I have with this season is that a few scenes are a bit predictable and boring to watch. Critics complain about the portrayal of cultural stereotypes. A review for The Guardian stated that “You name a stereotype, and within the first three episodes, Emily has not only encountered it but tried to rectify it, to adjust it to the American way,”. Season 4 ended with Emily, played by Lily Collins, moving to Rome to open an office there on behalf of Agence Grateau and to spend time with her new Italian boyfriend, Marcello, played by Eugenio Franceschini, leaving fans to wonder if she was going to permanently stay there, especially since Collins posted to Instagram with the caption, “There’s no place like Rome”.
The answer to that question is no. Lily Collins explained to Netflix Tudum that, “Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome, […] “It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome”. Netflix announced on Monday, September 6, that, “Emily in Paris”, will be returning for their fifth season. It’s scheduled to begin shooting sometime in mid-2025.
Season four was phenomenal, but will season five be just as good?
