The 2009-2010 Westborough Ranger hockey season is underway as they had their first game last night at Northstar arena against Wachusett Regional High School. Unfortunately the Rangers lost to the Mountaineers 5-0.

The Rangers have recently participated in the annual Jamboree where they faced a very good Marlboro team and the defending state champs Shrewsbury Colonials. They lost to Marlboro 1-0 and tied the Colonials 0-0.

The team has eight seniors and many juniors returning to the varsity squad.

The Rangers have a rookie goalie in net, junior Brenton “Zard” Croteau who will be an impenetrable force. The captain this year is senior “Devon” McCarthy along with the assistant captains seniors David McCauley and Jeff Kelly.

Last year the Rangers finished with a record of 5-14-1. The team lost five seniors and a key senior defenseman Max Kruse.

Senior Tucker Brady who is a wingman on the team, shared in order for the Rangers to be successful this season, they will need, “Netters…[Although the team] doesn’t have a lot or raw talent, but hard work and dedication will bring home the District Title.”

The defense will be strong this year so the offense will be forced to produce. When asked what it will take to beat Wachusett, Croteau said, “We have to play physical and we are gonna need netters.”

The Rangers’ next game is Saturday against Algonquin. It is at 5pm at Northstar arena.
