Obama Doesn’t Deserve a Piece of the Nobel Peace Prize

Even as a registered Republican, I have to admit that President Obama does have some good qualities. He has a LOT more charisma than President Bush ever did. And let’s face it; President Obama is a much better orator.

But despite these strong suits, the fact of the matter is that President Obama has accomplished very little thus far in his first term as president. I mean honestly, can anyone name anything he’s actually accomplished? Sure, he passed the stimulus package and no banks have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy since the package was passed, but other than that has he really done anything? So far, it seems like the only thing he’s doing is trying to pass a healthcare bill, which only 37% of Americans support due to the fact that it will most likely require American citizens to pay higher taxes and raise the cost of healthcare.

So why did he win a Nobel Prize? That’s the question on everyone’s mind. The Nobel Prize committee said that he won it because of what they “think” he’s going to accomplish. That’s just plain stupid, nobody should win a Nobel Prize based on what others think they “might” do. People should win based on what they’ve actually done.

Perhaps what’s even more ironic is that Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize while at war. Last time I checked, war is the complete opposite of peace.

Now many people would probably make the argument of “oh, well he just has to clean up Bush’s mess”, but in reality, Obama is just deploying even more troops, thus adding to the violence in the Middle East. He pulled the troops out of Iraq, but instead of sending them home, he sent them to Afghanistan. Obama has even requested that forty-thousand more troops be deployed to Afghanistan.

I’m genuinely stunned that Obama won this award over the many other people who have had more impact on the lives of others and who have actually had a bigger hand in reaching peace while in a place of significantly less power than Obama.

One of these people is Sima Samar, a women’s rights activist from Afghanistan who at immense personal risk, kept her schools open in Afghanistan even through the most oppressive days of the Taliban regime, (whose laws prohibited the education of girls over the age of eight).

The fact that Obama won the Nobel Prize over this woman is appalling. Obama hasn’t done anything, and yet he took the Nobel Prize from a woman who was risking her life educating young women. There is no way that Obama, a president with a 27% approval rating, deserves this award.

Barack Obama has made history. He’s pushed past the boundaries and become the first African president in a country where slavery was the driving force for almost 300 years. I don’t know if this deserves a Nobel Peace Prize or not…maybe some other award would be more appropriate but to say he hasn’t really DONE anything is unfair
