Think about how you use AI in your day to day life. Most commonly, students use it for help with homework or to make a difficult decision. But others use it for less conventional reasons.
In recent years, AI has become a point of controversy due to its immense use of energy, negative impact on the environment, and questions over whether what it is producing is true. But AI videos have had a renaissance lately with the popularity of TikTok series such as Fruit Love Island. With this, there have been conflicts over AI and whether the creation of such videos is moral.
Fruit Love Island, originally posted on March 13, 2026, gained popularity after gaining 3 million viewers overnight. The series is made entirely using AI generation websites. It was posted by user AI Cinema on Tiktok and gained popularity due to its audience participation. It follows a cast of humanoid-fruit themed characters such as a banana, strawberry, watermelon, and a kiwi.
Some students have publicly stated their love for the series. One specific student, Alice Marcotte ‘29, said the following when asked about the series: “I have dabbled in the viewing of Fruit Love Island. I heard my peers discussing the series on TikTok so I decided to watch it.”
When asked her opinions, she said, “I thought it was pretty interesting especially since the real Love Island hasn’t been on in a while. The drama of the fruit was pretty entertaining for me since I was a big fan of the actual show.”
But with the popularity it has also gained controversy due to the fact that AI has notoriously been detrimental to the environment. One student, Melanie Neiva ‘29, had this to say, “I disapprove of it just because I don’t see the point and I think it’s just a waste of water and the plot is not interesting. I just wouldn’t ever think to myself ‘Oh! I wanna watch Fruit Love Island’”
The series uses generative AI websites such as ChatGPT, Open Art, Cling 3.0, Runway, and Kaiber in order to create the series at all stages of the process, from writing the script up until the video is posted. ChatGPT is estimated to use 200-260 Gigawatts per hour when generating responses.
Additionally, the creator of Fruit Love Island has been involved in a large controversy across social media platforms. After receiving backlash due to the detrimental effect of these videos, the user, AI Cinema, posted multiple videos cussing out people who they felt were to blame for their videos no longer performing well.
In their posts, the creator asked if people were “happy” now that most of their videos were being taken down before turning to yelling at the fans for mass-unfollowing the account due to a lack of recent uploads. AI Cinema declared that if they get any more hate, the series will end permanently with them claiming they’d, “burn down the Love Island Villa”
The account still remains on TikTok, but only 10 videos remain on the account and all of the “crash out videos” have been removed.
When asked about her feelings regarding the “crash out” Rachel Weiner, a sophomore here at WHS, said, “I feel like she has a right to be upset, but at the same time, her videos are everything that’s wrong with the world.”
Overall, the series is highly controversial with people across the internet picking sides on whether or not it should be allowed online and whether or not the creator’s reaction to the hate was out-of-hand. So, it’s up to everyone to voice their opinions to save the dying series or to finally put an end to it.
