On November 18th, 2011, history was made. The video game “Minecraft” was released to the world, igniting the video game industry forever. Minecraft allows players to build, be creative, and interact with each other. You are given tools and blocks to build and survive, and it appealed to many video game players instantly.
After many years of Minecraft’s success, Mojang Studios announced that they will be releasing a movie in 2025, moving Minecraft from the video game world to the theaters. The movie was released on April 4th, 2025, and has already caused an uproar on social media. Seeing the trends all over apps like TikTok and Snapchat made me wonder how good the movie really was.
On April 8th, four days after the release date, I decided to watch the movie with my friend. We noticed that the movie theater was not that crowded, which was odd to us. We remembered that after the Barbie movie, the theater was packed for months, and you would always have to reserve your seat. As expected, there were mostly kids in the theater.
Right away, I found it to be a movie I did not like. I thought the acting was bad, and although the movie was supposed to be light and funny, I found it annoying. Movies like Barbie, Snow White, and The Lion King correctly interpreted the fun of the tale, but at the same time held a more powerful underlying message, which I found was missing with Minecraft. I personally think there was no real plot to the entire movie, and I was bored from the beginning. I talked to Alex King, a junior at Westborough High School, who also went to see the movie:
“I thought the overall experience was fun, but the movie itself was dumb. It did not really have a plot, and it was almost so bad that it was funny.” I agree with Alex in the sense that going to a movie is always a fun experience, but for the actual movie to be boring ruins the mood.
For people who like heavier plots, like Barbie, I would not recommend this movie to them. I would say it is perfect for little kids, but not for anyone older. I think for this reason, Minecraft should have just stayed a video game. The video game Minecraft still appeals to adults and teenagers, such as Fortnite and Roblox do as well. I do not like movies that only appeal to little kids, because I think that makes the movie an unenjoyable experience for anyone older.
If you are someone who enjoys silly movies, be sure to check out the Minecraft movie in theaters now! However, if you do not, I would not recommend this movie to you.
