Hurry Up Tomorrow marks the Weeknd’s sixth studio album and was released on January 31, 2025, by Xo and Republic Records. It contains guest appearances from Travis Scott, Lana Del Rey, Playboi Carti, etc.
In 2022, the Weeknd posted on his Twitter/X, “I wonder…Did you know you’re experiencing a new trilogy?” He was referring to his albums After Hours, Dawn FM, and Hurry Up Tomorrow marking the end of the trilogy. This album marks the end of Abel Tesfaye’s title as “The Weeknd”. In an interview with Variety, he made many references to “closing this chapter”, when asked which chapter he was referring to – the trilogy or his existence as the Weeknd, he said, “I would say my existence as the Weeknd.” This album plays a part in his very sad farewell to his alter-ego. He makes this death of his persona very visible during his sixth record on the album, detailing his drowning in a bath and overdose of sound effects.
Commercially, the album has been a success debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. And in support of the album, the Weeknd announced the “After Hours Til Dawn Tour”, featuring 26 concerts starting in May.
The Weeknd dropped “Dancing in the Flames” in September 2024. I would say that this single definitely held the same vibe as some of the other songs in his new album.
We really enjoyed listening to this album, however we found a few songs to be better than others. I (Pranika) had very high expectations for the collaboration between Lana Del Rey and the Weeknd since their hit songs, “Stargirl Interlude”, “Party Monster”, and “Lust for Life” were such huge successes but their recent collab in his new album didn’t quite reach the par. I found “The Abyss” to be a little boring and predictable compared to their other collaborations. I wouldn’t call it terrible but it definitely wasn’t one of their best songs and I genuinely believed they could have done better.
“Cry for Me”, however, is a whole nother story, I (Pranika) would say that this is the best song in the album and maybe even his entire career. It had a very catchy beat to it with meaningful lyrics that put together the song perfectly.
I (Tanisha) personally loved “Baptized in Fear” the most; the consistent beat and the range of his voice really made this song take off. I had very high hopes for “Reflections Laughing” because of his collab with Travis Scott and Florence + The Machine, and I thought the song lived up to my expectations. I loved the clear story about his fears in the industry, and it paired perfectly with the intensity of the song.
According to critics with Billboard, the best song on the album was “Niagara Falls.” This 4-minute and 37-second song had “bouncy 808s with pitched-up vocals” and is a beautiful exploration of love, pride, and growth. Tribune ranked this song eighth, believing that although it is one of the most replayable songs on the album, it is not as experimental as some of the other tracks. Tribune believes “Wake Me Up (Feat. Justice)” was the best song, stating that this song was a perfect mix of dance energy and introspective lyricism, making it the best way to start off the album. According to fans on various platforms, “Wake Me Up”, “HUT” and “Red Terror” were some of the best, although the entire album was poetry.
If you haven’t already, we recommend giving this album a try, it’s available on all music streaming platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify.
