This month, the chain restaurant, Wayback Burgers, opened its second Massachusetts store in Baystate Commons, adding to the array of fast-food chains in Westborough. Opened on September 14th, this spot has quickly become a popular place for both adults and kids.
The chain, known mostly for its burgers and shakes, has a large range of combinations to pick from. You can also pick from any of the signature burger combinations or even make your own. We tried the classic burger, the bourbon bacon burger, and the bacon cheeseburger. Alongside this, they offer a vast range of shakes and sides to pick from, such as the chocolate brownie shake, red velvet cupcake shake, onion rings, and tater tots.
These were our thoughts.
Hannah:
As someone who loves a good burger, I was impressed with the quality and taste of Wayback’s double bacon cheeseburger. The bacon cheeseburger consists of two smash burger patties, American cheese, bacon, pickles, onions, tomato, lettuce, ketchup, and mustard, all on a delicious bun. The patties themselves were delicious. They were juicy and flavorful and balanced well with the crunch of the pickles, onions, and lettuce. The addition of the bacon added a smoky taste that made the overall meal even better. Given how good the burger was, I was not impressed by their fries. They were a bit soggy and lacked the salty flavor which made me disappointed. I’d expect this if we had ordered takeout, but we ate at the restaurant which makes me question the quality of their fries. Together, the items cost $16.67, which I do feel is more on the expensive side. Overall, I would give the burger a 10/10 and the fries a 5/10.
Grace:
The bourbon bacon burger has two patties, a layer of bacon, cheese, an onion ring, and a serving of bourbon mustard on top. For the burger and a brownie shake, the total was $17.54. The burger surpassed my expectations, the balance between a savory burger, paired with the sweetness of the bourbon mustard made for a great combo. The onion ring added in between added a satisfying crunch, to the fluffy freshness of the burger bun and the well-cooked patties, along with adding a more sour element to contrast with the sweetness of the bourbon mustard and the saltiness of the bacon. The bacon was well-cooked with a nice crunch and was not soggy at all. Overall I would rate the burger a solid 9/10, I just wish there was something that made the burger stand out more than just any other burger you could buy from a multitude of other fast food chains.
Sahana:
I had the classic burger and a chocolate brownie shake and the total came up to $16.14. The classic burger was everything you could expect from a well-made, simple burger. The double-stacked burger patties were cooked to perfection and didn’t have a rubbery or undercooked texture. I appreciated how fresh all of the veggies on the burger were. The lettuce was crisp, the tomatoes were ripe, and the pickles gave just the right amount of tang to the combination. The simplicity of all of the ingredients and parts of the burger, truly made this feel like a classic American favorite. I think the price of this burger would be more worth it if it came with a small side of fries, but for just the burger it is on the more expensive side. Overall, I would rate the burger a 9/10, and it is an item I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone.
Grace & Sahana:
We both tried the chocolate brownie shake which is one of their three signature shakes. While the shake was enjoyable, it didn’t stand out as anything particularly special; however, it was not bad. The brownie on top and the chunks mixed throughout the creamy vanilla base were perfectly baked and were the best balance between chewy and chocolatey. On the downside, the chocolate syrup that was drizzled on the inside of the cup had a slight metallic taste, which wasn’t the best for the experience. Overall, we would give the shake a 7/10 and would recommend it to anyone with a sweet tooth.
All three of us were extremely impressed by the atmosphere of the place. The staff were extremely welcoming and our food came out relatively quickly. If you are looking for a new spot to check out, this should definitely be on your list.
