Senior Jared Ward stopped all 23 shots he faced to lead the Westborough Rangers hockey team past Marlborough 2-0.  Both goals were scored in the second period, and earned Coach Chet Hallice his 100th career win.

After the first period ended in a scoreless tie, the Westborough players who took the ice for the second period were a completely different team.  They demonstrated energy and level of aggression that they had been lacking in the first period.

Jake Uhlman, junior, scored the first goal 7:59 into the second period with an assist from Steven Falvey, senior.  Their line in particular showed a certain dominance and proved to be very effective against the Marlborough defence.

The second goal was scored by defenseman Dylan Kehoe, junior, on a Westborough power play at 10:58.  Jake Uhlman and Gavin Wilsker, senior, both recorded assists.

The Rangers utilized good strategy and timing on their power plays; however, the team could benefit from being more aggressive in front of the net.  By placing a player down by the net, their shots that deflect off the goalie and are cleared by the defense can instead be rebounds.  Senior captain, Sam Kruse pointed out before the season that scoring on rebounds would be their best chance at scoring.

“We will have to get goals by out skating the other team and score on rebounds,” said Kruse.

Westborough will face Wachusett in the final of the Boros Cup at 7:30 pm on Saturday.
