Seniors Last Day!
Congratulations!

Westborough Girls Basketball Season Opener

By: Carly Flahive

The Rangers girls varsity basketball team opened up against non-league rival, Wachusett Thursday night. Although the game did not go quite as well as the Rangers had hoped, losing 16-44, they were able to learn from the game.

With a young team, 4 of which are freshman, 4 sophomores, and 3 juniors, and only 2 returning varsity players, the team has a lot to work on. The speed of play at the varsity level is much faster than what our young team has since experienced and the girls are aware of the work they have cut out for them.

Junior captains, Julie Hutchinson and Kaylie Doherty, have helped lead the team thus far, helping to teach plays and get their team better and better each day. Although Hutchinson unfortunately fouled out in the game, she was a huge defensive contributor while on the court.

On the game, Hutchinson said, “Wachusett has always been a very strong team and we knew that going into the game…Our shots weren’t falling and as a team, we realize we have a lot to improve on throughout the season.”

Nicole Foster, first year varsity player and starting point guard for the Rangers, scored 5 points for the team, being the highest scorer for Westborough. As a sophomore, Foster will continue to improve and maintain being a huge help for the team.

With a tough schedule to begin the season, the girls look to stay positive and get better every day. Losing to Wachusett, one of the strongest teams Westborough will go up against, gave the Rangers a chance to see where they stood.

The Rangers head to Shrewsbury on Tuesday, December 16, to play a tough Colonials team that will provide them with another chance to gauge their progress thus far.
