The Westborough Girls’ Varsity soccer team started their season strong yesterday, Tuesday, September 2, against Holy Name winning 2-0.
Just a few minutes into the game, freshman forward Skylar Barry tucked in the first goal of the season as she rebounded the goalie’s initial save and placed the ball back into the upper right corner of the net. With about 15 minutes left in the first half, senior defender Becca Siegel was able to head in a ball off a corner kick, straight past the goalie, giving junior defender Megan Hippeli her first assist of the season.
The Rangers started their season strong considering there were six injured players on the bench. Having to pull up 5 freshmen players from the freshman and JV teams, they impressed early with this decisive victory.
Freshman goalie Chelsea Taylor and second year varsity sophomore midfielder, Emily Longo, both played well in yesterday’s game as well. Taylor made a number of good plays including some sliding dive tackle saves inside the 18 yard box. Longo played comfortably and within herself as she is looking to build on a successful freshamn campaign for the Rangers.
Senior captain Jenna Thomas, who is out for the season as she recovers from a torn ACL, says, “We had 2 varsity subs and with so many younger players, it was good to see that we could rely on them to step up the plate.” Thomas remarks, “The younger girls are very talented and in a few years when they all play together they will have a very strong team.”
After losing 14 seniors last season, this year’s young team has a lot of work to do to fill their shoes however, the Rangers look like they just might be able to do it.
