For Jameis Winston, Sophomore Slump Could Be Easy to Avoid

By Jeff Arnold

Winston celebrates last season’s National Championship victory over Auburn

College football began last night. Yes it was two terrible teams, yes they were from two meaningless conferences, but also yes, it was a great game and could not be happier that it is back. Now that we are past the opening night we look towards title contenders, Heisman hopefuls, and the scandals that seemingly hit the sport every season. Florida State’s Jameis Winston, was involved in all three aforementioned aspects of NCAA football. The Seminoles won the BSC Championship, Winston became the second (redshirt) freshman to win the Heisman, and he also was accused, yet not charged with, rape. Now comes his second season as FSU’s starting quarterback and expectations are entirely different from last year. He is no longer the kid who lit up Pittsburgh in week one, he is no longer the laughably inarticulate quarterback with Red Lightning by his side; now, he is one of college football’s biggest stars with a target on his back.

As hard as it will be for Winston to live up to expectations this season, most of this struggle will be inner. Why? Because the ACC is a terrible conference and consequently their schedule is easy. The opener this Saturday against Oklahoma State won’t be an easy win, but the Seminoles are still favored to win, as is the case with every other game in the season. They only play two ranked opponents (no. 16 Clemson and no. 17 Notre Dame) but both are at home. All in all, it should be an easy walk to the inaugural College Football Playoffs, if Winston can block out the distractions that come with being a college star.
