Scream Queens: A Must Watch

By Amanda Pickwick and Becky Plunkett

Sitting at home, alone, in the dark with only the light of your TV, watching the newest comedy/horror show on a Tuesday night sounds perfect to anyone who loves a good laugh, a good scare, or a well written mystery. Scream Queens is a comedy/horror mini-series on Fox that is a surprising mix of “laugh-out-loud” funny and “cover-your-eyes” scary. The hit show is produced by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Ian Brennan, and Dante Di Loreto. Murphy, Falchuk, and Brennan are also the writers of the show. New episodes air on Tuesdays at 9:00pm, eastern time. You can catch up on previous episodes on Hulu, On Demand, and at FOX.com. That way no one has to miss any of the suspenseful hilarity.

The plot focuses on one death that took place on the campus of Wallace University nearly two decades earlier.  That death was easy to conceal, but then several more people are mysteriously killed. Dean Munsch, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, is forced to deal with concerned parents, curious college students, and the red devil himself (or herself). The most popular sorority on campus, Kappa Kappa Tau, is in the center of it all. Chanel Oberlin, the infamous sorority leader, has tried her best to prove herself queen of the campus, aiming to keep the attention on herself, rather than on the murders. She has her minions (Chanel #2, #3, and #5; #4 is another mystery) and her standards for Kappa. With the new additions to the sorority, Chanel’s world is turned upside down and she has her own devious plans to terrorize the campus. With the writers promising at least one death per show, you will be on the edge of your seat for all two hours of the premiere.

Probably the most memorable thing about Scream Queens is its characters and cast. There’s the mean queen Chanel Oberlin played by Emma Roberts, and her borderline slaves, Chanels #2 , #3, and #5. Chad Radwell played by Glen Powell  is Chanel’s on-again off-again boyfriend who’s the typical college frat boy with an ego that matches the amount of money in his bank account. Guest stars include pop singer Ariana Grande, Nick Jonas, and former actress, model and comedian, Niecy Nash. Jamie Lee Curtis has returned to play a horror role as Dean Cathy Munsch. Grace Gardner played by Skyler Samuels is a momless pledge who is looking for the perfect, sisterly version of a sorority. Keke Palmer who grew up on Nickelodeon’s show, True Jackson VP, is back to acting as the confident roommate of Grace. The new pledges that received rude nicknames from Chanel, are less than satisfactory for her, including Glee star, Lea Michele. Gigi Cadwell plays the helpful and goodhearted national president of the sorority. Wes Gardner (Oliver Hudson) plays the part of Grace’s overprotective, single dad. And of course, there’s the mysterious red devil whose identity is yet to be revealed. Each character brings their very own action and humor to the table that mix well together and define the show. In addition, Scream Queens has an unforgettable cast, as characters are played by old and new stars.

Scream Queens is its own unique show, but it shares characteristics with other shows as well. Scream Queens’ writers/producers Murphy and Falchuk also write and produce American Horror Story. Murphy, Falchuk, as well as Brennan created and wrote Glee. Scream Queens seems to be a mix of the two, except it includes a serial killer(s) and is set in a college campus. More than just writers and creators are shared with Glee; the two shows share an actress, Lea Michele. The show has some key differences that differentiate it from American Horror Story and Glee. For example, it isn’t as dark as American Horror Story, and Scream Queens’ characters are different than Glee’s; there are no other dimensions or back stories; the mean girls are just mean and the weird pledges are just weird. Scream Queens appears to be a mix of both shows, but it also has its unique components.

Just when you think you’ve solved the mystery of who’s behind the red devil mask, Scream Queens takes a shocking turn. Each week you can narrow down your guesses of who the murderer really is and discover a side to a character that you didn’t know existed. You will find yourself questioning whether or not to laugh at the blunt words of Chanel, or the stereotypical frat boys. With an outstanding cast, an amazing storyline and humorous yet terrifying script, the sadistic Scream Queens has it all.
