WHS P.E. teacher and coach Lorin Reed is the very inspiration for us to attempt those 20 jumping jacks in P.E class.
Though Reed is the JV baseball and freshman football coach, he still makes time to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. He is a great example of what he teaches: health and wellness. Instead of playing video games, Reed prefers to play a game of frisbee or football with his friends. In fact, he does not own a single gaming system. Moving his thumbs does not give him the satisfaction of scoring a touchdown or hitting a homerun.
As a child, Reed aspired to be an athlete, as many young children do. In high school, he felt teaching was his calling. After graduating from Westborough High School, Reed went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Keene State.
During these first few years, he was working towards earning a
teacher certificate when he suffered a setback on his way to becoming a teacher —he had a professor who discouraged him from wanting to teach. Reedthen decided to pursue a health and science program. However, he soon became tired of the mundane jobs, which his education offered. Reed resumed refining his teaching skills at Cambridge College where he acquired his Masters.
Armed with a teaching certificate, Reed started to search for a new job at a high school. He chose to work for the very school he graduated from as repayment for the excellent education he received there. He has now taught at WHS for four years.
Reed chose to teach high school students because they are at an age when they are becoming much more aware of what’s going on around them andare thus more capable of intelligent intellectually challenging conversations. He also loves helping students to see the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and teaching them how to maintain one.
Reed believes that his teaching style is engaging and fun, with a positive classroom environment that makes for many great discussions between students.
Always living by what his mother taught him, “The Golden Rule”, he always tries to treat others with the respect that he would want.
Coach Reed is an invaluable teacher at WHS, inspiring healthy
lifestyles in students and sports players, and truly living by one of his favorite sayings, “Work Hard, Be Kind, Dream Large, NO EXCUSES”.
