Alex Hayes, a senior and leading actor of almost every Westborough High School play, is now preparing for his 13th performance in his acting career. Acting for nine years, Hayes says that his favorite play he ever performed in was “Splendor in the Grass.” He explained that this experience had the most emotional cast that dedicated themselves to the play and even all the rehearsals. It was truly life changing for him and his acting career.
Hayes was inspired to act from seeing his older brother, Ian, on stage. When he was young he said that he used to make himself his own medieval character in his backyard with his imagination. Expressing extreme interest in acting, Hayes wants to pursue in his acting career even after high school. “As long as I am acting, I will be happy,” he explains. He would like to act in movies, public plays, Broadway, or even be a Disney actor.
Working with a new cast every year is one of the challenges that Hayes faces in acting in high school plays. He claims that it is hard to work with a new cast each year due to lack of experience and communication within the cast. Sometimes the final product does not fulfill his expectations and hopes. Regarding his own effort put into the plays, Hayes explains, “Going into each play starts off the same, but depending on how much my role offers in the production determines the amount of effort I put into it. I do always try my best to imitate my character.”
Hayes doesn’t just stop at acting. He also participates in the WHS Cross Country and Track and Field Teams. Although all of these activities are very time consuming along with school work and working on weekends at the South Street Diner, Hayes loves the routine he cycles through on a weekly basis. He describes all these commitments to be, “easy to partake in, because of my passion for success with my interests.”
