The typical day for the Situation Room consists of a student moderator briefing everyone on a topic set for discussion. An article is passed to anyone who is unfamiliar with the topic. The moderator ignites the conversation by asking a question on the controversial issue, and the debate begins.
To become involved in that debate, go to WHS social studies teacher Mr. Cullen’s room A328, Tuesdays at two pm. The Situation Room is a student-run debate club that was recently formed on March 8. The club is constantly welcoming new members, and its size has already increased within one week.
Former members of the Gibbons Debate Club, freshmen Riley Taylor and Matt Senie wanted to continue participating in debates. They decided to form a debate club at WHS, and found few difficulties in the process. Faculty members encouraged the idea, and no one was opposed to it.
The Situation Room hopes to have guest speakers in the future. In the past, Gibbons has brought in political figures to talk with their debate club, and the Situation Room would like to do the same.
When asked what this club brings to WHS, Senie replies, “To raise awareness about domestic issues and to get people interested in the issues so they will be self motivated to try and find solutions.”
