Making Some Noise: WHS's Marching Band

Rain, snow, or sunshine they’re certainly the most loyal. They can be found sitting towards the far end of the bleachers holding polished instruments, while wearing old-fashioned black hats. They even have a slogan: “halftime is game time.” With 67 members they form a crowed which fills in an entire section of the stands at Mewhiney Field.

The Westborough High School Marching Band, directed by Mr. Lefebvre, is a well tuned-machine. This isn’t surprising considering their year began the week before school at band camp; which is a week’s worth of practice in the evenings at the high school from 5pm to 9 in the evening. It is their equivalent to the athlete’s version of training camp.

At this camp the band began to prepare for the Homecoming half time show, which is their most watched half time show of the year. A spy theme connects the three James Bond songs they perform at halftime: “Mission Impossible”, “Peter Gunn”, and “Live and Let Die.” During the week in late August the band also practices many other songs including “California” and “Louis Louis”. These songs are the ones they play in the stands at every Ranger football game.

Fast forward to this year’s homecoming halftime when the football team was in the locker room; it was the band’s chance to be the stars. And they were as the homecoming performance was outstanding. The crisp notes came off the band’s instruments even though it happened to downpour right as they took the field. Not a problem for this group who never misses a game and rarely misses a beat.
