Last Thursday, January 30th, the Westborough High School girls’ volleyball team got the experience of a lifetime. Due to their hard work and dedication, the girls were invited to the Statehouse in downtown Boston, to be recognized for their efforts. This three-time state championship team has earned their way to a high regard, which was proven to all last week. As one of the players myself, I can attest to this field trip being one of the coolest during my high school career.
Thanks to Coach Roger Anderson, we were mostly aware of what the day had in store for us. However, the day turned out to be much better than we originally anticipated. Right as we arrived at the Statehouse, we were greeted by State Representative Hannah Kane. Ms. Kane then took us to our private room, where we could leave our things and get ready for the day.
First, we were taken to the governor’s ceremonial office and portico. Most people do not get to see inside these rooms, so it was a very special opportunity. We were also taken outside to take a group picture before moving on to our next spot. Although the Governor and Lieutenant Governor were not around to meet us, it was still a crazy experience to see their offices and where they worked.
After, we made our way to a House Session. This is where the House decides on bills, either on the state or federal level. We got to sit in the actual seats representatives sit in, and at this time we were joined by State Representative Ms. Kate Donahue as well. While in session, there was a brief moment where the Speaker of the House recognized us to everyone in attendance, congratulating us on our efforts and victories. This was an awesome moment for the team because it showed just how much our team had an impact on everyone. Next, we made our way to the senate where the same process was repeated.

Then, we got a tour and ended by the Grand Staircase. It was awesome to learn all about the statehouse, and the history of this famous place. We got many pictures with everyone, including Senator Mr. Mike Moore. We were gifted many certificates and citations to recognize us even more for our achievements. This was a surreal experience because we were able to realize that all of our hard work had paid off in more ways than one.
After a brief lunch, we headed back to school. The field trip was over, but the memories will last the WHS Girls’ volleyball team a lifetime. We hope to show upcoming grades that anything is possible and that they can be in our shoes one day as well!
On Tuesday, February 4th, the team will unveil the state championship banner in the Fisher Gym. At halftime of the girls’ varsity basketball game- approximately 6 pm, the team will pull the banner covering and receive their plaques from the win. Please join WHS girls’ volleyball on this great accomplishment! We hope to see you there!
