Student council has recently introduced a fundraising event called “Chuck-A-Duck”. The fundraiser takes place at any home varsity basketball game. Fans can purchase one duck for $2 or two ducks for $3 to throw at halftime. The goal of the game is to land your duck on the Ranger’s mustache in the middle of the court. Whoever gets their duck closest to the mustache wins.
Stuco member and face of the event, Hemanth Nekkalapudi, has enjoyed being a part of Chuck-A-Duck. Nekkalapudi explained that the money raised from Chuck-A-Duck is split between the student council and the winner of the game. “Chuck-A-Duck has been a success! The winners usually go home $50 richer and stuco has been able to raise money as well”, says Nekkalapudi.
Nekkalapudi mentioned that a lot of sports fans and WHS students have participated in this event at basketball games, adding “We’ve had some student participation from both our very own student section, kids from the opposing team’s town, middle schools, and even parents of the student athletes.” One of the previous Chuck-A-Duck winners is a parent of a WHS student athlete.
Student council and Nekkalapudi hope to see more student involvement in Chuck-A-Duck as well as getting underclassmen involved in the game. According to Nekkalapudi, “the underclassmen are the future of Westborough as a whole, and to leave this event and several others in good hands, we need more underclassmen participation.” Nekkalapudi hopes to improve Chuck-A-Duck by doing more advertising and making the total prize bigger. “I hope to make the total prize bigger so we can get more participation from fans who come to the game.”
WHS student and frequent Chuck-A-Duck participant, Sadie Blumberg, enjoys playing the game and supporting the student council. “I heard about Chuck-A-Duck at the varsity basketball games, it is also a big school event.” Blumberg enjoys participating in the event and explained that it is one of her favorite events that STUCO has put on so far this year. Blumberg can be found playing at most basketball games, throwing multiple ducks for a better chance to win– “it’s every duck for themselves.” Like many, Blumberg hopes to win Chuck-A-Duck someday.
