WHS Gives Back With Food Pantry Drive

As we know the Westborough Food Pantry provides food for over 130 Westborough families. Each family receives up to three bags of groceries depending on the size of the family. Typically the food pantry will distribute 125-130 bags per week. Estimating that each bag weighs 15-20-lbs averages out to 2,000-lbs of food per week distributed. That’s over 50 tons of food per year. Nine hundred people a month are being fed thanks to the food pantry.

Fortunately enough, Westborough has certain groups of the town such as the Post Office, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, and WASA to support the food pantry. These groups help fundraise and donate food to support the food pantry. If you would like to donate you can bring your donations to the Forbes Community House at 9 East Main St.

This year at WHS, sophomore Addison Potenti organized a food drive where some classrooms are collecting donations for the food pantry.

I think that it’s really good for people to get involved and realize how fortunate we are, and are able to give back to those in severe need during the holiday season.

This idea was brought to the schools attention by a former teacher at Worcester Academy, Jamie Sullivan who is encouraging people in the suburban areas within Worcester County to help support the food shortage that is happening in this area.

Potenti shares,“I think that it’s really good for people to get involved and realize how fortunate we are, and are able to give back to those in severe need during the holiday season.”

In Worcester there is an organization called Woo Fridges that allows people to help those in food crisis. There are five different locations that have Woo Fridges in Worcester where you can put your donations. For more information about the locations of the fridges and what you can donate, visit https://woofridge.org/.

If you are interested in donating to help people in Worcester, there are boxes in WHS classrooms and in the lobby of WHS where you can place your donations. Your donations will help to brighten the lives of families during hard times this holiday season.
