2020 Presidential Election: it’s More Important Than Ever for Students to Stay Updated

As the upcoming 2020 presidential election comes closer, it is now more important than ever for students to get updated on the news.

In today’s day and age, politics and the news, in general, can often be quite confusing and polarizing to follow. However, this doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t be staying informed on topics and current events that affect them the most. With the extensive amount of sources available to students, as well as the constant stream of these sources, there seems to be no excuse to not know what is happening around us, in our country, and in the world. It all comes down to the student’s drive itself to stay updated on the world around them. Besides it being essential to keep students updated, many issues really do affect or resonate with adolescents at this time. For instance, the March For Our Lives Campaign which rose to international fame last year was a student-started gun control protest following the Parkland Florida High School shooting, where many WHS students attended. This is only one of the key examples of the events and news stories students have been affected by in the past.

On the topic of staying updated and aware of what’s currently happening in the news, as well as what is to come, here is what we know about the candidates of the 2020 Presidential Election so far. According to the New York Times, as of now, we have sixteen democratic party candidates and two Republican party candidates. Among Democratic candidates is Elizabeth Warren, one of Massachusetts’ own Senator. Additionally, Bernie Sanders, a popular candidate from the 2016 Presidential Election is out campaigning once again. Beto O’Rourke, who is consistently towards the front of the polls, is also running as a Democrat. While he hasn’t officially started a campaign, in mid-march Joe Biden very strongly hinted his participation, stating, “I have the most progressive record for anybody running.”

According to CNN, in a Quinnipiac University poll, Joe Biden is in the lead with 29%, followed by Bernie Sanders (19%), and then Beto O’Rourke (12%) for Democratic voters in the United States. Looks like we already can see just a glimpse of which direction the 2020 Presidential Election will be going in.

It is essential for students all across the globe to be informed. In the United States, with the election rolling around in about a year and a half, many high school students will be part of the population voting for who runs our country. Our very own Westborough High school students will be a part of determining the future, so students must stay aware and updated.
