Rangers Golf Plays Their Way Into States

In their first season in the Mid-Wach A League, the WHS Golf team completed their regular season with an 8-8 record heading into district play.

After spending years in Mid-Wach B, the squad moved up this year to the more competitive A League. The Rangers held a 4-4 record within the league despite matching up with golf powerhouses such as Algonquin, Shrewsbury, and Wachusett.

The league switch was not the only major change for the program this year, as Coach Sandy Robichaud took the reins as head coach. After years of coaching Westborough’s Girls Golf, Robichaud has brought her extensive golf experience to the boys’ side.

Robichaud’s squad went on to shock many people across Central Mass this week by coming in second at the Division 1 district tournament, qualifying them for the MIAA State tournament this upcoming Monday.

Westborough was one of just two teams from Central Mass Division 1 to qualify for States, along with Algonquin.

In addition, seniors Kevin Flahive, Ryan French, and Ryan Nichols qualified for the individual State Tournament with scores of 79, 80, and 81 respectively. To advance to the individual tournament, players had to finish in the top six overall at the District tourney, including ties.

Flahive says, “It’s really exciting to be able to get all the way to States with a lot of seniors on this team. We’ve had a lot of success already and hope to close out the season with a great round on Monday.”

The team will bring six golfers out to compete at Chicopee Country Club on Monday, with the top four individual scores counting to the team score.

Seniors Flahive, French, and Nichols will make the trek in addition to senior Jack Choate, his brother sophomore Nick Choate, and freshman Karl Reyes.

“Nobody expected us to be in this position,” comments Nichols. “We’re out to prove that we can hang.”
