WestboroughHigh School’s coed swimming and diving team competed in a quad meet this past Friday, January 25, held at the Atkinson Pool. The swimming and diving team, coached by Bethany Bergmann and assistant coached Ann Marie Costa, competed against teams from Wachusett, Algonquin, and Bromfield.
Hopes were high going into the meet for the WHS swim team. They held a great record, only losing to their biggest rival Algonquin by just two points. The WHS swim team had a successful start to the meet with the boys’ 200 medley relay team of seniors Tom Lawton, Ryan O’Neil, and Andras Palfi and freshman Sam Rong, finishing first.
There were also some highlight individual performances by the swim team members throughout the meet. Palfi had an amazing night finishing second in both the 200 free and the 200 breaststroke. There were key first place finishes by O’Neil in the 100 butterfly and Rong in the 100 backstroke.
In addition, the boys’ 200 free relay team of O’Neil, Rong, junior Nate Vondervellen, and freshman Greg Cervenak, also placed first. The divers for WHS, junior Elly Stone, and sophomores Jess Neuwirth, and Jen Litchfield, also had remarkable performances Friday night. Stone was the lead scorer from the WHS diving team, scoring 208.0 and ranking her second overall in the meet.
Unfortunately, the WHS swimming and diving team was once again defeated by Algonquin by ten points and closed the quad meet in second place. Still very proud of the team, Coach Bethany congratulated them on an outstanding night of swimming and diving.
