After losing to Algonquin in the first round of the 2012 Borough’s Cup, the Rangers took on the Marlborough Panthers in the consolation game on December 15. Early on, the puck seemed to be in Marlborough’s favor, but after the first period there was no score.
The Rangers were outshot, but senior goaltender Tony Cibelli played a strong game all night. Despite the heroics of Cibelli in net, Marlborough gained the lead from a nice goal by Jake Chaisson, putting the Panthers ahead 1-0. Westborough continued to apply pressure to prevent Marlborough from gaining on their lead.
At the end of a long shift, junior defenseman Jack Kinsman capitalized on a back hand shot that beat Marlborough goalie Ben Wickleman over the glove. Marlborough forward Eric Bastarache then netted what turned out to be the game winning goal.
Last minute efforts were canceled out as Bastarache added an empty-net goal to finish off the Rangers 3-1. Westborough now drops to 0-2 on the year as they gear up to face Shrewsbury on December 19 at 8:00 pm at the Northstar Youth Forum.
