On Friday October 5, the WHS Student Council hosted the Annual Homecoming dance. Unfortunately, this year many students left the event early with the same thought: “Wow that was horrible.”
Apparently, students were caught “grinding” and some were threatened with suspensions from school sports. The student body was annoyed and somewhat angry that the WHS staff ruined their fun. They were upset for not being able to dance how they wanted to; they blamed Student Council, when really it was the staff who was just doing their job.
Students were warned at the end of the day on Friday. Principal Smith made an announcement explaining that the dress code would be strictly enforced, and there was to be no “inappropriate dancing”.
The first question that comes to mind is: why would teenagers in their right mind want their teachers to see them grinding? Isn’t the Monday after the fact awkward and sort of embarrassing knowing that your Spanish or Chemistry teacher may have seen you bumping and grinding against a member of the opposite sex?
It is not a new thing that teachers chaperone the dances; and students who went to the dance with the intention of grinding should have taken that behavior somewhere else. Those who were angry that they weren’t allowed to gyrate with one another can do so in the privacy of their own homes, and away from the presence of those from whom you make ask for a college recommendation in your future.
Of course this is not the 1950s and the teenage generation doesn’t necessarily do the hand-jive or the cha-cha, but there are other ways that you can dance and have fun with your friends without embarrassing yourselves.
However, if you really want to dance like a member of Jersey Shore, then get yourself a fake ID and head to the nearest club. We’re in high school, not on a reality TV show where we get paid to act like sexual animals, so it shouldn’t be too much trouble for us when were asked by our superiors to keep it clean. If you don’t like the rules, then don’t come, and if you do come and aren’t satisfied, don’t embarrass yourselves more by complaining.

this article was enticing and funny and I totally see the argument in a new point of view. I thought the language and the sincerity was perfect and I could practically hear the writer explaining her argument. Job well done!
