One of the most popular staples of the town of Westborough is the small Dairy Queen located downtown near the rotary. Every year, the ice cream shop attracts a surplus of families, adults, and even the elderly. There is a large variety of sweet treats and foods to choose from, including sundaes, cones, hot dogs, and their signature treat, Blizzards. The Blizzard is a popular item on the menu and is arguably the most famous Dairy queen option. It incorporates ice cream and specific toppings to create a delicious mixture. There are so many choices at DQ but with the upcoming summer season there is even more to choose from! This summer menu includes several different delicious flavors of Blizzards, such as the cotton candy blizzard, s’mores blizzard, and a few other enticing options.
After taking a trip down to our local Dairy Queen, we decided to try a few of these summer items! To start off, the first option was the S’mores Blizzard. This ice cream contains a marshmallow base with pieces of chocolate covered graham crackers swirled in between. This Blizzard brought a great flavor from the first bite! The marshmallow base was delicious and when combined with the graham crackers, really resembled a s’more by the campfire. This was our personal favorite out of the seasonal items and we would recommend this to anyone looking for a summer treat! A review by The Simpsonian, the oldest continuously published student newspaper, claims “S’mores are returning to the menu, and it has been a favorite in the past…This reminds me of the campfire treat, and it is delicious. The flavor and consistency are perfect”. A freshman at Westborough, Sylvia Benyas (15), claims, “This Blizzard was most definitely my favorite as it tasted almost exactly like a S’more! I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys marshmallow and chocolate flavors”.
The second blizzard that we gave a try was the delicious option, Mixing Bowl Mashup. This flavor consists of a brownie batter base with small chunks of chocolate chip cookie dough. The chocolatey taste of the brownie batter combined with the chewy sweetness of the cookie dough leaves a delightful aftertaste in your mouth. After the scrumptious S’mores blizzard, this was definitely our second favorite option of the bunch. If you love brownies and cookies as much as us, this sweet treat does a great job of incorporating their wonderful flavors alongside the chilled creaminess of the soft-serve ice cream. A review of this blizzard from The Impulsive Buy, a review newspaper on junk foods and snacks, states, “this one is really chocolatey and the cookie dough has a great chewy texture.”
The final blizzard we tasted was the Confetti Cake Blizzard. Pieces of confetti cake and sprinkles are mixed into a cake batter base. Although this was quite delicious, the texture of the cake batter pieces was strange at first. They are crunchy with a burst of flavor but might not be for everyone as they can become a little grainy when mixed with ice cream. If you are interested in flavors like Cake Batter or Cotton Candy, then this is a similar option. This is a popular opinion as the Simpsonian Student Newspaper states, “Confetti Cake is returning to the menu to celebrate DQ’s 85th birthday. I was most excited about this one, but ultimately, I was disappointed. This treat features vanilla soft serve, confetti cake pieces and confetti frosting. The flavor was excellent, but the consistency completely ruined it for all of us. The cake pieces were tiny, making the texture feel grainy”. Overall, the taste of this option was spot on, but the texture of the mix-ins may not be for everyone. Depending on your preferences, if you like texture and confetti cake flavors, then this Blizzard could be a hit or miss for you!
Within the town of Westborough, the two major ice cream sellers are Dairy Queen and Ulhman’s. Dairy Queen is known for its delicious soft serve, while Ulhman’s is praised for its unique range of flavors and locally made treats. Dairy Queen is definitely the way to go if you enjoy a softer, creamier choice of ice cream, most commonly served in different sized cups. On the other hand, you may like the products of Ulhman’s better if you crave more dense ice cream similar to the ones served at grocery stores. Additionally, at Ulhman’s, people tend to purchase their treats in cones such as waffles or cake ones. In our opinion, Dairy Queen is the way to go due to its constant additions and changes to the menu. New blizzards are added each season, giving exciting flavors for those who are looking to try something new. Furthermore, you could purchase ice cream similar to Ulhman’s at any store, while the soft serve offered at Dairy Queen can’t be found in many other places.
Dairy Queen’s can be found across the world in various locations. If you are interested in trying some of these seasonal flavors make sure to visit our local Dairy Queen on 18 Summer St! Additionally, Dairy Queen desserts can be found online on platforms such as DoorDash, Uber Eats, and more. Westborough High school students are huge fans of the classic DQ Blizzard and should definitely check out these new summer options. After school, practice, or anytime you find yourself in downtown Westborough, make sure to visit the Dairy Queen on Summer Street. Overall, these blizzards are bringing a storm of flavor and deliciousness to the 2025 summer. The S’mores, Confetti Cake, and Mixing Bowl Mashup are unique items that a variety of students and families may enjoy!
