Crumbl cookies have been taking the internet by storm lately, with many people flocking to their locations for their signature cookies and sweet treats. While many people are crazy for Crumbl, there are people who think the calorie-dense cookies are too sweet and not worth the price. I put these cookies to the test when I visited the Crumbl location in Shrewsbury, MA.
Crumbl boasts a variety of cookies and other desserts that rotate weekly, and this week I chose the Pink Velvet cookie to try. With 710 total calories, it was actually one of this week’s lower-calorie options. When I bit into it, the first thing I noticed was how sweet it was. Many people struggle to finish a Crumbl cookie because of how sugary it is, but I actually enjoyed it because I have a sweet tooth. The cookie was a nice light pink color and tasted like a classic sugar cookie, but thicker- slightly crispy around the edges and very soft (and maybe a little undercooked) in the middle. The icing piled in swirls on top tasted very much like the cream cheese frosting you’d find on a classic red velvet cake, but a little sweeter than the standard. Overall, I really enjoyed how the cream cheese frosting tasted paired with the sweet sugar cookie. However, after a few bites, the intense sweetness gave me a tingly feeling in the back of my mouth and I had to wait a few minutes for it to subside before finishing the cookie.
A handful of journalism students at WHS gave their opinions on Crumbl as well, and the overall consensus wasn’t fantastic. Lucy Rice judged that Crumbl is overrated due to its “high pricing and overwhelming taste.” According to Rice, the cookies are way too sugary and can only be enjoyed in small bites, as it’s “just a lot in your mouth.” Social media, too, has mixed opinions on Crumbl, as some people get the weekly flavors religiously but others share the sentiment that the calorie-dense and overly sweet cookies aren’t worth the hype.
While Crumbl doesn’t have many competitors that make similar products, many people choose establishments such as Dunkin Donuts to get large boxes of sweets for sampling. In general, Crumbl cookies are way more filling than Dunkin’s donuts, but also come at a much higher price. You can buy a dozen Crumbl cookies for a whopping $61.99, whereas a box of a dozen donuts from Dunkin is only about $13.99. I think many people would agree that the drastic price difference speaks for itself.
A typical Crumbl cookie ranges from $4-6, which some would consider pretty steep pricing for a singular cookie. However, they also offer their weekly cookies in mini sizes, as well as boxes of four, six, or a dozen cookies. If you’re looking for a special sweet treat or just want to try these cookies yourself, Crumbl’s nearest locations are in Shrewsbury, Hudson, and Milbury.
