Famous singer/songwriter Tate McRae released her new album So Close To What on February 21, 2025, and it marks her third studio album. Her hot singles “It’s ok I’m ok”, “2 Hands” and “Sports Car” paved the way for the new album. “It’s ok I’m ok” peaked at number 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The album features 15 songs and features The Kid LAROI and Flo Milli. The popular singer also announced that there would be a Miss Possessive Tour throughout North America, South America, and Europe in 2025.
“It’s ok I’m ok” was the most popular song in the entire album, with good reason. I enjoyed listening to this song, it had a very catchy nature to it like so much of her music. I thought that this was one of the songs that sounded a little different from the rest of the songs in the album. The beat and overall vibe of it contrasted from other songs in the album.
“2 Hands”, “Sports Car” and “Dear god” have a very similar vibe, the instrumental sound alike and it was a bit boring to listen to since the songs were very predictable and almost identical to each other as well as the music she had made in the past. I genuinely think that McRae could have done a better job and a lot of fans are describing it to be “severely undercooked”, on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Times Magazine draws parallels between McRae and iconic 2000s artists such as Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Stating that the “sultry and slightly mean girl charm” reminds the author of the article of past artists.
Overall, I found the album to be a bit basic and a lot of the songs sound very similar to each other and music she had made in the past making it a little boring and predictable to listen to. I hope, in the future, she will do a better job at pushing away from her typical sound and creating new ones that interest her fans.
