At 7:00 PM on March 27th, Westborough High School will host the annual faculty and student lip sync battle. Every year this event is anticipated as an exciting, unique, opportunity for the community to come together and raise money for charity and get a good laugh. The lip sync battle consists of different members of the WHS faculty pairing up and performing lip sync routines, often alongside students who volunteer to join them. The night is always full of high-energy routines, community bonding, and support for larger causes.
History teacher, Ms. Gormley first started off the event in 2016 as a way to raise money for a new scholarship in honor of Anne Piscia, a WHS faculty member who had passed away from cancer the previous year. Since then, Ms. Gormley has continued to plan and coordinate this large event in the hope of donating the money made to an important cause. Months ahead of time, Ms. Gormley works extremely hard to make sure there are plenty of people involved and ensure everyone sticks to the deadlines.
In the past, the money raised has gone to Hurricane Disaster Relief, Australian Wildfire Relief, and World Hunger Relief. This year, all proceeds are being donated to World Central Kitchen and United Nations World Food Programs, two nonprofit organizations that provide food relief services.
Senior Diya Karthick, who will be a part of this year’s performance, says, “I’ve loved getting to work on this performance and help get everyone excited for this event. I think that it’s an amazing way for all of us to laugh and have fun while also raising money for an important cause.”
With this event having gone on for many years, there have definitely been some performances that stand out. Ms. Gormley mentioned that Mr. Perryman’s disco dance in 2017 to a Bee Gees song was one of the most memorable. Another fan favorite was Ryan Summer’s dance in 2023 with Mrs. DeBoer, Mrs. Titus, and Mrs. McCroskery.
When speaking about this year’s event, Ms. Gormely says, “We have a great opening number for everyone! I don’t want to give away too much, but the staff has been working very hard getting all the moves down. All I can say is that we’ll be taking you down a music timeline. It will be a lot of fun!”
The lip sync battle is undoubtedly one of the most exciting events of the school year and is consistently recognized for how fun it is to watch and participate in. It is an opportunity for faculty to work with students to create exciting performances that raise money for charitable causes. You can buy tickets for the event at lunch starting on March 24th. Be sure to come and watch your peers and teachers perform and don’t forget to donate to the event to help raise money!
