After having their season-opening last week, Westborough Dairy Queen is back and better than ever. New merchandise and menu items are helping the popular spot thrive early in the season. However, four miles down the road, Ulhmans is also opening their windows as the warm weather approaches. This family-run business is starting strong with new friendly employees and decor. The competition between the two ice cream places has gone on for a long time, but we are here to fight on the side of Dairy Queen.
Personally, soft-serve ice cream is our go-to. Dairy Queen has blizzards and other creative mixes to make with a soft serve- instead of just milkshakes, Uhlman’s option. They have multiple different flavors of blizzards, along with four different sizes to choose from. That being said, blizzards only range from four to eight dollars, with the largest possible size costing only eight dollars. Over at Uhlmans, a small scoop of ice cream is seven dollars. The price difference between the two spots is another huge reason that we will continue to go to DQ over Uhlmans.
Along with the specialty blizzards, DQ also has different types of shells that they can put over their soft serve ice cream. Chocolate and strawberry shells are our favorites, but there are also many cool possibilities for toppings. A new topping this year is the “crunchin cookie dip,” a fun sugary addition to the ice cream. Changing menus around is a great way for DQ to attract new customers, which is something that we have noticed Uhlmans does not do. Uhlman’s menu has looked the same for many years, and we personally think that switching some things around like DQ does could help the business thrive.
DQ has also added the “crunchin cookie parfait” to their menu. Different from Uhlmans, DQ sells food options, such as hotdogs, sandwiches, and parfaits. Uhlmans most commonly just sells popcorn, so if you are looking for food and ice cream, DQ would be the place to go.
People who enjoy Uhlmans more often bring up the difference in scenery between the two ice cream shops. People make mention of the cows, picture booths, and the many picnic tables. Although DQ does not have as much seating, we think that it is important to remember that DQ is located in downtown Westborough, where there are multiple restaurants, parks, and playgrounds to walk to. There are no attractions close to Uhlmans, so we personally think the two spots are even.
Both of Westborough’s signature ice cream shops have pros and cons. If you are in the mood for homemade ice cream, Uhlmans is the choice for you. If you are more into soft serve and customizing your order to your own preference, then you should lean towards Dairy Queen. We still encourage you to try both, formulate your own opinion, and get excited for the warm weather!
