Over the course of history, tons of Spiderman movies have come out, bringing the character to life and showing the story from being a normal kid named Peter Parker to being the web-swinging protector of New York. A new version of the Spider-Man movie was created in 2018 named Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The movie grossed $394 million dollars worldwide and won Best Animated Film at the 91st Academy Awards, being the first-ever non-Disney/Pixar movie to win since Rango in 2011.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a movie about an Afro-Puerto Rican teenager from Brooklyn named Miles Morales who is bitten by a radioactive spider and his newfound powers. Not knowing what to do, he meets Spider-Man (Peter Parker) in an underground lab fight to stop a collider that opens portals to multiple universes created by Wilson Fisk (Kingpin), who wanted to find his wife and son in another universe because they died in a car crash. Unfortunately, Peter dies, leaving Miles by himself.
From this, he meets another Spider-Man named Peter B. Parker who is from another universe. Before the collider stopped, it brought the second Peter to Miles’ universe. Alongside Peter, other heroes were brought to Miles’ Universe, like Spider-Gwen (Gwen Stacy), Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, and Penni Parker. Throughout the movie, Miles learns how to be a good Spider-Man, helps his friends return to their respective universes, and beats Kingpin. The movie was huge, and the sequel came out 5 years later on June 2nd, 2023, named Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is set a year and 4 months after the events of Into The Spider-Verse. Miles has been saving the city and surviving school. After fighting a villain called “The Spot,” who can create portals anywhere, Miles goes to his school for a parent-teacher meeting. When the teacher talks about college, Miles says he wishes to go to Princeton because of their work in quantum physics. He wants to major in quantum physics because he wants to find a way to meet his friends from different universes. After the meeting, he has to fight the Spot again and beats him.
At a party for Miles’ dad becoming police captain, Miles meets Gwen again because she has a watch that can help travel to different universes. Eventually, Gwen leaves, and Miles follows her and realizes that her true intentions were to stop the Spot because he was becoming more powerful. After following her to a different universe, Miles helps her to try to stop the Spot but eventually fails as Spot escapes.
After the fight, Miles goes to Earth-928 and meets Miguel O’Hara (Spiderman 2099). Miguel teaches Miles about canon events, which are crucial events that happen in Spiderman’s life that shape who they are. Miles learns that one canon event of every Spiderman is that a police captain very close to Spider-Man dies. Miles learns that his dad will die in a destruction because of Spot.
As Miles tries to escape Earth-928 to save his dad, Miguel says to Miles that he wasn’t supposed to become Spider-man as the spider that bit him was from another universe. The movie ends with a cliffhanger as Miles arrives on a different planet where he becomes the prowler and his dad is dead, and Gwen tries to find him with friends like Pavitir Prabahakar (Spider-Man India) and Peter B. Parker which sets up Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was supposed to come out on March 29th, 2024 but it was announced that it was delayed indefinitely due to the tight schedules of making Across the Spider-Verse and concerns over the production timeline. The movie has been predicted to come as late as 2027.
Alongside this, Shameik Moore, the actor of Miles Morales, has been the subject of some controversy. Moore posted a video with actress Laura Harrier (Liv in Spider-Man: Homecoming) with the caption “coming soon.” Harrier said that the post was misleading and disrespectful because she was engaged and called Moore a “weirdo.” Moore eventually apologized, saying that the caption was to reference an upcoming song. However, Moore experienced more criticism, which eventually led to him deactivating his Social Media accounts.
In my opinion, I think that Beyond The Spider-Verse will be released in 2027 because it took 5 years for the second movie to come out. Alongside that, there hasn’t been any update for the past year and no trailer has been posted so it seems as though the movie is on hold. I’m excited to see whether Miles will save his dad from Spot or if Spot ends up killing him, but I hope that Miles saves his dad. I’m also excited about the storyline of Miguel stopping Miles from altering the timelines because Miguel doesn’t want to ruin the universe and will go to any means necessary to save it. I’m excited but hopefully, the production starts to pick up and we receive new information soon.
