Since Westborough football had their devastating week one loss against Burlington, they’ve recently been on a five game winning streak, averaging over 35 points per game.
Westborough’s defense has been doing an outstanding job since the team’s week one loss, only allowing an average of 10 points or less to be scored by the winning team each game.
In addition to the Rangers defense, the team has also had a major difference in discipline. Since week one, the team has had less penalty yards. This shows a big part of why the defense is letting up less points.
Westborough’s success has been led by coaches Joe Beverage, Kirby Pierre-Louis, Ryan Friedberg, Ryan Dailey, Tyler Reil, Brian Glowacki, Michael Chapman, Paul Dowd and Phil Deroche.
When interviewing Coach Reil about the success of the team and what he thinks has changed the direction of the team’s outcome. He said that, “team camaraderie and the hard work that everyone has been putting in the weight room for the past few years has made a huge difference.” This is a big reason why these two seasons have been more successful than any other in the past 20 seasons.
Captain Thomas Cashman comments on how they have been able to keep such good discipline for the past 5 games. Cashman said, “We’ve been cracking down and have been allowing less mistakes in the game.”
He also said “If we do make a mistake, we move forward as a team,” the captain added “we make up the penalties we lost yards from in practice by running and doing punishments to make up for them.” This reveals a big part of the team’s success because the coaches are holding them accountable for the selfish plays they make during the game.
Ben Friedberg, a senior that plays on both offensive and defensive line for Westborough, was asked what has changed since the Burlington game. He stated, “the team was reminded that the seniors the year before him said they couldn’t do better than a 8-3 year, which gave our team extreme motivation to do even better this year which is a big contribution to our success.” In fact, in Westborough’s recent game against Fitchburg, they were up 44 at half-time, allowing them to play all of the JV athletes in the 4th quarter.
Overall, Westborough’s success is due to hard work in the weight-room, motivation and discipline. Can the Rangers keep this up and continue their historic run going all the way to win a state championship?
