October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a dedicated time to raise awareness about breast cancer, educate communities, and promote early detection. This campaign serves as a reminder of the impact of breast cancer on millions of people and highlights the importance of support, research, and productive health measures.
Early detection is vital in the fight against breast cancer. Regular screening can lead to early diagnosis, which significantly improves treatment outcomes. Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast tissue begin to grow uncontrollably. While it predominantly affects women, men can also develop breast cancer, making awareness critical for all. Factors contributing to breast cancer risk include genetics, lifestyle choices, and environmental influences.
On October 8, the Westborough High School had its annual Dig Pink Match against Algonquin for the sixteenth year in a row. Their WHSVB program raised awareness toward funding for breast cancer and other types of cancer research. WHS students supported the team by wearing pink the day of. Dig Pink is a national volleyball movement that has provided millions of dollars. So far, WHS has raised over $50,000! This year the team had set a goal to get up to $5,000-6,000 and they had surpassed that goal, making $7,950.
I recently interviewed one of the varsity volleyball players, Anvi Arora. She explained that Dig Pink is significant to her stating that, “Growing up, my best friend had brain cancer. So knowing that there are programs like this that are out there to help and support people who are suffering from this illness which takes such a great toll on a person’s life. It made me happy to know that I’m helping in a way”.
She further explained that teams throughout Massachusetts have been coming together to support Breast Cancer awareness. She highlights that not just Volleyball teams have been participating but also that Football teams joined in, some wearing pink gear. She states “I just found it really inspiring that something like this, and that even though I’m playing against Algonquin, [Dig Pink] is just a thing that brings everybody together. […] Raising awareness for illnesses is something that can bring everybody together”.
This October, consider how you can contribute to the cause. Whether it’s wearing pink, donating to breast cancer research, or simply sharing your knowledge, every action counts. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a powerful reminder of the resilience of those affected by this disease. By encouraging education, promoting early detection, and supporting research, we can work together to change lives and ultimately find a cure. Awareness leads to action, and action saves lives.
