The Boston Celtics season starts again on Tuesday, October 22 against the New York Knicks. Here’s everything you need to know before watching the 2024-2025 season!
On June 17th, 2024, the Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks in 5 games to win their 18th championship. On June 21st, Boston held the official Celtics parade to commemorate the exceptional season. With preseason going on now, the Celtics are the favorites to win back-to-back championships. During the NBA Draft, the Celtics acquired Baylor Scheierman out of Creighton and Anton Watson from Gonzaga. Both rookies would probably see little to no daylight on the court with the abundance of talent the Celtics have, but it will be fun to see how they contribute.
One of the biggest questions coming into this season was the availability of center, Kristaps Porziņģis. Porziņģis suffered an ankle injury called medial retinaculum in the first round of the 2024 playoffs last year. He missed a significant amount of time, but he was extremely valuable during the games he was well enough to play in. This season, Porziņģis is reported to return sometime in December, meaning he will still miss the first couple months of the season. Once again, Al Horford will have to step up to make up for the loss of Porziņģis.
As of now, the Celtics have not lost any players from last season. They re-signed many players, including Jayson Tatum and Derrick White, to longer contracts, and obtained Lonnie Walker IV during the offseason.
Last year was the debut of the NBA Cup, with the Los Angeles Lakers taking home the trophy. Aside from the championship game on December 17th, the matchups will be part of the regular season. The Celtics’ first NBA Cup game is on November 12 at 7 p.m. against the Atlanta Hawks. They also only have three holiday games: Christmas Day against the Philadelphia 76ers, New Year’s Eve against the Toronto Raptors, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day against the Golden State Warriors. Make sure to tune in to NBC Boston or other live broadcasts of the game, and check out various ticket-selling sites to grab your tickets!
