The 2024 Emmys were on September 15th in Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, and there were various winners. Let’s dig into the shows that won and where you can watch them!
First, for Best Drama Series, the winner was Shogun by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. Shogun is set in 1600s Japan and follows the lives of two ambitious men from different worlds. John Blackthorne is an English sailor who was left shipwrecked off the coast of Japan, while Lord Toranaga, a powerful daimyo (Japanese lord), wrestles with political rivals and power struggles. You can watch this 10-episode series on Hulu and FX. Anna Sawai won Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Toda Mariko. Hiroyuki Sanada also won Best Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Yoshii Tauranga, beating out Donald Glover, Idris Alba, and Gary Oldman.
Hacks won best Comedy series and follows Deborah Vance, a Vegas-based stand-up comedian who needs to reinvent her act to continue working at her casino. She hires self-centered and arrogant Ava Daniels as her next writer, and together they build a strong bond and help each other overcome their problems. You can watch this show on Prime Video, Hulu, Max, and Apple TV. This show and its actors have won several awards through their 3 seasons, including 8 Emmys and a handful of others. This year, Jean Smart won best actress for her role as Deborah Vance.
Another show to look out for is The Bear, created by Christopher Storer. Although the show itself didn’t win any awards, Jeremey Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas all won awards for their respective roles. White for his role as Carmen Berzatto, Bachrach for his role as Richard Jerimovich, and Zayas for her role as Bettina Marrero. The show is centered around Carmen Berzatto and his crew and their journey of opening a fine dining restaurant. The awards were given in the Comedy category, however many viewers would not describe this show as traditionally funny.
Baby Reindeer, a drama directed by Weronika Tofilska and Josephine Bornebusch, focuses on Donny Dunn and his female stalker, Martha. Even though this story is fictionalized, it is based on lead actor Richard Gadd’s personal experience. Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series and Richard Gadd won Best Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. You can still watch this show on Netflix.
