In the days leading up to the first day of school, a highly anticipated event took place for all incoming freshman, freshman orientation! Freshman orientation is intended to familiarize the school to the incoming freshman to hopefully make their first day a little less daunting. One aspect of freshman orientation is the club fair that takes place following their tour around WHS. Various clubs can sign up to have a booth, this is intended to promote and share your specific clubs agenda, as well as your goals overall.
I personally ran the booth for WHS’ Make-A-Wish club! I am the Volunteer Coordinator of Westborough High’s chapter of Make-A-Wish. I love to spread the incentive on the organization, I think Freshman orientation is a great place to do so. I think this because so many incoming freshmen are eager to join clubs and become involved in our school’s extracurriculars.
Last year, the most successful fundraiser our club held was a bake sale right outside of Roach Brothers in downtown Westborough. We had many people walking by saying they know someone who has been directly helped by Make-A-Wish and their mission, and everyone was so willing to donate their money to support our club.
This year, our main goal is to continue to spread the word on Make-A-Wish. The founders state the organization’s mission is “Together, we create life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.” It is so important to find ways to give back to our community and to children who need it most. No child deserves to be sick, but hopefully through Make-A-Wish we can work to put smiles on their faces!
