Boygenius is a girl band consisting of three independent artists: Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, created in 2018 with the launch of their first album titled Boygenius. Since then, they have released one album titled The Record, and one EP titled The Rest. When comparing these two newer releases, we believe The Record outshines The Rest.
The most popular song on The Record is “Not Strong Enough”. This is an upbeat song with very hard-hitting lyrics about feeling unworthy and struggling to understand yourself. The most popular song on The Rest is “Black Hole”. This is a very melancholy song without a very clear idea or message. Although both songs are very good, “Not Strong Enough” has a much more catchy tune and we think it’s more interesting to listen to.
Overall, The Record beats The Rest not because the songs are significantly better, but because there’s more diversity. The Record has a wide variety of tunes and multiple songs with each artist as the lead vocalist. We prefer this because there are songs that are more soft-sounding and chill but also songs that are funky and danceable.
This being said, The Rest is an EP, which means it contains fewer songs than an album but more than a single, so there’s less opportunity for variety. We think it would’ve been better for them to wait longer, write a few more songs, and release another album to prevent the EP from being so repetitive. With such a small EP, there are not as many opportunities for every vocalist to have a solo song and songs where they all lead in equal amounts. Since all three members are incredibly talented solo artists as well as group artists, it is slightly disappointing to not have that same kind of variety as The Record gave us. Overall, The Record and The Rest are both amazing collections of songs to showcase the band’s talent, but The Record still comes out on top.
