The Westborough Rec. Department is getting ready for their Special Olympics Basketball program to begin. Volunteers are needed and greatly appreciated. Every year the program is very successful and enjoyable for participants as it provides opportunities to make new friends. Special Olympics Basketball allows kids to be part of a team for those of diverse backgrounds.
WHS student, Abby Fiedler, greatly enjoyed her experience doing Special Olympics Basketball last year. “It is always so fun!” Fiedler explained that she will be participating in the program again this year. Fielder’s favorite part about the program is “the way everyone comes together to support a greater cause.” Volunteers do not need basketball skills to participate and any skill level is welcomed. Fiedler explained that she has never played basketball and still participates in the program, “I’ve never played basketball but I still had lots of fun!”
Coach Steve Fiedler participated in the program last season and is excited for this season to begin. “Coaching the players in the unified basketball program makes any Saturday better. Just spending a little time with these athletes is worth it.” Fiedler is a long-time basketball coach and former college athlete. He has found the program to be super fun and very rewarding. “It’s not that often that your travel team players are excited to see you walk in the gym, but the athletes in the special olympics/unified program always have a smile on their face and are happy that you’re there to help.”
Practices will begin on January 6th and end on March 9th. Practices will be located at WHS in the gyms from 1-2 pm on Saturdays.
The program is organized by parent coordinator, Ilyse Levine-Kanji, who you can contact with any questions and additional information using the email address below. Using the also found below, you can register for Special Olympics Basketball. The program is free of charge and easy to sign up for!
