Following the extremely popular seasons one and two, Season Three of Only Murders in the Building, starring Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short was released on August 8th. After highly successful seasons one and two, together garnered 160 Nominations and 46 wins, with 17 of those nominations being Primetime Emmys. Only days after the airing of the final episode of the season it has been released that the show has already been renewed for a fourth season.
Season three followed our stars, Mabel Mora, Oliver Putnam, and Charles-Haden Savage wrapped up in another mystery. With Season Two ending on a major cliffhanger, the trio attempts to tackle the case. After solving Bunny Folger’s murder in season two, all is looking up for the gang, with Oliver producing a play with Charles starring as one of the leads, joined by Ben Glenroy played by Paul Rudd. As everything looks to be going smoothly, tragedy strikes the production, and Ben Glenroy drops dead on stage. The three stars are thrown into another murder mystery, facing false leads, betrayal, and conflict between the golden trio.
While the acting and character development are on par with the past two perfect seasons, the pacing of the most recent season was lacking. The time spent on varying relationships and drama between the trio was a bit drawn out. The first 5 episodes were very light on the actual murder mystery. While we did get to know the big three more and a more in-depth look at their life, the show is supposed to be about murder and the show doesn’t quite center around it as much as it should. If they focused just a bit more on the actual case the show would have kept my interest long.
Besides the lack of mystery, they left a pretty major character of season 2 out of this new season. Mable’s girlfriend Alice, who was prevalent in season 2, was not mentioned at all or even referenced in the new season with zero explanation. Even with this flaw, which every show is bound to have is still incredibly lovable and endlessly funny. The season also featured a multitude of celebrity cameos including Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, Jesse Williams, Jane Lynch, and Matthew Broderick, along with a number of Broadway stars.
Overall this season lived up to the first two, providing a laugh and a good time.
