A Shot for Life (ASFL) is a non-profit organization based in Massachusetts that works to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Mike Slonina founded the organization in 2010 to support people like his mother, who was diagnosed with cancer that year.
The organization’s mission is to make a positive impact on cancer research by providing funding for innovative and cutting-edge research projects.
On April 9th, 2011, Slonina became the first to shoot a basketball for over 24 hours. He tore a ligament in his shooting hand along the way and faced severe soreness. Slonina finished the challenge shooting 73% from the mid-range and around the three-point line. Slonina saw this challenge as an opportunity to create a platform for fundraising for ASFL.
ASFL hosts a series of basketball games and tournaments, including their 24-hour basketball challenge, where hundreds of high schoolers participate at a time. These events are extremely effective at raising money for cancer research and awareness. In addition to basketball events, they raise funds through other sports challenges and corporate partnerships. They have hockey and baseball events and work with various companies and organizations like the Red Sox, Mass General Hospital, and many more to raise additional money and garner support.
ASFL has been very successful and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the fight against cancer. They have also been able to support families who are affected by cancer by providing them with financial assistance.
ASFL is truly a remarkable organization making a difference in the lives of people with cancer. Through their efforts, they are helping to fund innovative research that is leading to new treatments and ultimately finding a cure for cancer. It’s essential to support organizations like ASFL to ensure those with cancer can access the best treatments and have hope for a cure.
