New WHS Club: “Westborough Helps the Homeless” is Ready to Make a Difference

As another school year rolls around, the newly founded club Westborough Helps the Homeless (WHH) is ready to make a change in the community. WHH will be focusing on finding fun ways to raise money and give back to local homeless shelters.

As the founder and President of the club, sophomore Maggie Hanlon has everything planned out for the club’s first year. Some of the activities that will be occurring include Venmo bingo, a clothing drive, a hygiene product fundraiser, and possibly an opportunity to volunteer at a soup kitchen.

WHH is a low commitment club that plans to meet once a month either on Zoom or in person. It is perfect for a busy student who wants to be involved at school.

When asked why she started the club, Hanlon claims, “I started the club because of the homelessness I was seeing in Central Mass, specifically the Worcester area. It made me want to raise awareness about it and help as many people as possible. The service project I participated in this summer (Appalachia Service Project) also helped me recognize how many families were struggling nearby. My hopes for the club are to just serve the homeless community and hopefully grow in  numbers so that we can be as effective as possible.”

The treasurer for the club, Abby Fiedler, is very excited for the club to get into action. When asked what she was most excited about for the club, she states, “I am most excited to see how our events turn out. We have spent a lot of time planning them, so I am hopeful they will be successful!”

The club’s first meeting is going to be on Friday, October 1 in Mrs. Flanagan’s classroom A211.
