After the incredible success of “Leave the Night On,” Sam Hunt has taken a bit of a risk with the release of his second single “Take Your Time.”

For the critics of Hunt’s unique style, this is exactly what they fear in terms of the future of country music. As much as artist like Chase Rice push the boundaries, Hunt goes to an even greater degree utilizing his mellow voice and modern sound to produce a  new breed of country. The track, which leads off Hunt’s debut album Montevallo, blends together country and R&B in a way that only he can.

“Take Your Time” opens with a piano and light guitar intro before breaking into a half-sung, half-spoken opening verse that tells the story of meeting a girl that holds the attention of an entire bar. Staying true to much of his songwriting, Hunt uses word play in the song as he begins the chorus with, I don’t wanna steal your freedom, I don’t wanna change your mind, I don’t have to make you love me, I just want to take your time.

As much as traditional country fans may hate Sam Hunt, you still have to respect his artistry and this song specifically. It is unapologetic in its failure to conform to the norms of more traditional country music, but is still seductive and easy to listen to. It’s crazy, but it fits in with the direction of country music today. Look for this song to gain popularity and aid in Hunt’s rise to stardom.
