On Wednesday, October 15, the annual Dig Pink Volleyball game takes place. To anyone outside of the WHS volleyball program, it might just seem as a day where we wear pink tu-tus, pink beads, glitter and feather boas. Here’s what Dig Pink is truly about.
Dig Pink is an annual event organized by the WHS volleyball program. They raise money for a foundation called the Side Out Foundation. The day consists of raising money and awareness for the research of breast cancer.
The Side Out Foundation was first founded by Rick Dunetz, a high school volleyball coach at West Springfield High School, VA. His mother was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time and this really struck him. The story of West Springfield’s volleyball team is truly a Cinderella story. In the beginning of the season they were losing all of their games and after hearing the coach’s story, the team was inspired and motivated to win. They ended up winning the district championship. Their coach’s story about his mother truly gave them a desire to win. After winning games, the wins gave the Coach’s mother hope as well.
The Side Out Foundation started as outdoor volleyball tournaments to raise money and awareness, but then other coaches and schools decided to pick up on the event. Now Westborough High School finds itself celebrating the event once again. This incredible event all started with a Cinderella team and with a coach who planted a seed of hope.
Dig Pink isn’t only a day to raise money and awareness, it’s a day where the community remembers those who we lost to breast cancer and any other cancers as well as to honor and celebrate those who survived. It’s a truly heart touching event and the volleyball team is very passionate about this event.
Over the past four years, Westborough has raised over $13,000, this year’s goal is $3000. At the event, there is a bake sale, concessions and also pink accessories for sale at the entrance of the gym.
Donations can also be made online at www.digpink.org.

Even though I have attended a few Dig Pink events and knew that it was for raising money for breast cancer, I never knew how it started. This “Cinderella” story as it is called is truly amazing and I am glad to live in a community where we celebrate this dig pink event.

This is a great article, Melissa! Being a part of this program, it was really important to me and all the other players to help raise awareness to this event. This article displayed all the benefits of Dig Pink, and what to expect while you are there. This was a really great, informative article, Melissa. Good job:)

This was a very informative article. I participated in Dig Pink this year and I agree that it was a huge success. I did not know many of the things about the Sideout foundation that you mentioned in your piece. I think it was a very good way to inform everyone about how Dig Pink is really more than just a volleyball game where everyone wears pink.
