Netflix Takeover:  Has Netflix taken over Hollywood and WHS?

By:  Jalen Worstell

Netflix has exploded over the past couple of months making it the 10th-largest company by revenue according to dot-com companies.  And now their next move, according to The Washington Post, is to disrupt Hollywood’s biggest money maker, the movie theatre industry. Netflix is an American entertainment company that provides thousands of tv shows and movies you can access on a computer, phones, and smart tvs through subscription.

Netflix makes on average $16 million a month. The company has even produced over 50 of their own “netflix original” shows and movies.

WHS sophomore Corina Gencarelli says, “I love one of the netflix originals, 13 Reasons Why, I was able to finish the whole season in a week.”

13 Reasons Why was released at the end of March this year and it is not sure how many people watched the show due to Netflix’s policy, but the show was a huge success and even months after. The show is still talked about as an important  part of teen pop-culture. The show was so successful that the producers are already filming the second season due to high demand.

Most people prefer binge-watching in the comfort of their own home, which has been altering the future of going to the movies which could cost people on average $30 for admission and food at concessions.

According to The Washington Post from July 18:  “We understand that our approach to films – debuting movies on Netflix first – is counter to Hollywood’s century-old windowing tradition,” CEO of Netflix said in its earnings report July 17, 2017.  “But just as we changed and reinvented the TV business by putting consumers first and making access to content more convenient, we believe internet TV can similarly reinvigorate the film business.”

Although WHS junior Alex Izvolsky doesn’t have a Netflix account, he still watches it with friends.

Izvolsky shares that “even though I don’t use Netflix because my parents don’t want to pay for it, I still like it whenever I watch with friends, but I surely think it’s negatively impacting the movie industry. Why would you want to leave your house, when you can just stay at home?”

Great article, Jalen! I agree that I’d rather stay at home than pay so much and have to leave my house for movies. It’s a big change in the industry and a great idea for an article:)
