Please, Do Not Talk to Me About College Anymore

“Have you decided which college you are going to yet?”

No, I haven’t.

“Your major?”

Yes, I guess so.

“Well,  you’re senior. You’re running out of time.”

Oh. I guess I am.

As a senior at WHS this year,  the only conversations people seem to manage to hold with me are about college. Do I want to talk about college and what I want to major in? Not really. I would rather talk about anything else. And I know I am not alone.

I asked a few seniors what is the number one topic some of their family members talk to them specifically about during a family gathering or just a simple reunion with some family friends. They mostly answer:  my college essay, how many ivy leagues I am applying to, whether I am doing an early decision or regular and the list continues. Sometimes, they even try to force them into a specific career, because it seems “better” than the one they have chosen for themselves.

Notice how I put quotation marks around the word better? I put them for a reason.  Just because some people believe there are better career choices, does not mean those career choices are the best options for students. Besides, we are ONLY seniors. It is nice to know what kind of path you want to take after college, but you do not have to finalize everything and make all your life decisions just because you are applying for college.

This whole process of applying for college is exhausting, terrifying and definitely nerve-
racking. So please, do not talk to me about colleges anymore.
