Have a Wonderful Break!

Westborough: The Windy City

                  Welcome to New Orleans sign

Although Westborough is far from Chicago, the whipping breeze could sure be felt during the Student Council’s Homecoming Festival.  This wind caused trouble at the mask making booth where I was stationed as feathers and pom-poms blew around on the table. However, this was really not a problem because the Homecoming Festival was a complete success. Chairperson Jamie Gagliano says “Homecoming festival went well. We had a steady group of people throughout the whole event. One thing that I was particularly proud of was the number of clubs that participated and how well they did.” At this festival there were numerous clubs like Center Stage playing “Improv” games, the Senior Class with their annual Chocolate Fountain, MADMAC with candy corn guessing, and E-Club with tie-dying shirts to name a few.

The festival was accompanied by a parade led by the Marching Band. Drum Major Jackie Andrews describes her first parade. “It was exciting because the Marching Band never walks for long distances. I thought it was fun to have everyone walking around. It was different than the normal half-time show.” This parade was followed by a Student Council float and the Girl’s Field Hockey team riding in on their scooters and rollerblades, a flashback to these childhood activities.

On Friday night there was the Mardi Gras Masquerade. Greeters handed out beads and masks at the entrance to the guests and the gym was transformed into a scene from New Orleans. The silhouettes of jazz musicians and swing dancers lined the walls. Music notes, masks of gold, green, and purple were sprinkled on the white walls of the Fisher Gymnasium. There was a variety of music and the winners of the 2010 Homecoming Court were crowned with Brett Handell and Meredith Geller as the king and queen for the senior class. This dance was one of the best attended in Westborough history and the usual dance setup even had to be expanded to accommodate for the additional number of people.

The Homecoming festivities are some of Student Council’s biggest events of the year. But the activities do not stop there as this Sunday the council is going to the JDRF’s Walk for Diabetes and is beginning to plan its next events.
