Rangers Varsity Girls’ Soccer

by Myles Goldman

Back-to-back days of close soccer games would have bothered some teams but not the 2010 Rangers Varsity Girls’ Soccer team.  Following a 1-0 win at Hudson on Thursday, the team came home to Joseph Mewhiney Field on a humid Friday afternoon and beat the Holy Name (Worcester) Napoleons again by a score of 1-0.

Junior Jenna Kelley scored the game’s lone goal in the first few minutes of play, and this was all the Rangers and senior goalie Christine Hillier needed to secure the win.

Hillier made a couple of key saves in the game’s final ten minutes as a desperate Holy Name team gave the Rangers everything they had.

The Rangers (3-2-0, 2-2 Mid Watch league) and Naps played a very physical game with both sides  losing players during the game due to injury.  The physical play was a surprise to Rangers captain Sam Thompson.

“They’re small and I didn’t expect them to be as aggressive as they were.  We’re bigger, and we had to respond to their aggressiveness,” Thompson explained.

Coach Mumby was happy with the victory but was also concerned with the team’s lack of scoring through most of the early season.

“We’re squeaking it out, and I’d like to get more than one [goal] but I’ll take it.  One nil [though] is never a safe score,” Mumby commented.

The Rangers next game is this Tuesday, September 28th at home with a 4 pm start time versus Quabbin.
