Boroughs Ready: WHS Hockey Season Begins

It’s that time of the year when the most anticipated part of the hockey season is here: the Boroughs Cup. The Boroughs Cup consists of Westborough, Northborough and Southborough (Algonquin), Marlborough, and Wachusett. This tradition of the annual tournament has been going on for decades and promotes a competitive and anticipated start to the hockey season. Marlborough took the Boroughs Cup title last year, but the 2022 Westborough Rangers are looking to bounce back and win it this year.

At WHS, the Boroughs Cup has been discussed heavily, for the past couple of months. Hockey players around WHS have been pestered with the question“Are you Boroughs ready?” and all of them answer back “Are YOU Boroughs ready?” The amount of attention the Boroughs Cup has attracted is unlike anything seen from other sports events at WHS.

Senior hockey captain Garrett Barriere says, “We got Wachusett first round, they’re tough. I think if we beat them then we have a good chance to win it all.”

Unfortunately, the Rangers fell 5-3 last night to Wachusett. The offense looked really good with three different goal scorers: seniors Jake Dapolite, Teddy Miller, and Owen Lenkauskas.

Algonquin also won their first game.

The Rangers play their second Boroughs Cup game at NorthStar rink on Saturday against Marlborough. The time is TBA.

Senior hockey captain Jon Lahue says, “It was disappointing losing to Wachusett in the first round, but I know we can bounce back in the Marlborough game.”
